Stars Come Out for Opening Ceremony

Thursday evening (October 3rd) marked the start of the 18th Busan International Film Festival, Asia’s largest film event. A star-studded red carpet outside the Busan Cinema Center led to the opening ceremony, which was followed by a screening of the opening film Vara: A Blessing, a Bhutanese production from director Khyentse NORBU.

Just over 300 films, which include almost 100 world premieres, will play throughout the celebration in the Korean harbor city. As with previous years, there are numerous Korean films on offer but unlike past editions, a greater deal of focus has been afforded to other Asian films for this year’s event. Among other points of interest this year are the directing debuts of two of Korea’s most well know film stars. HA Jung-woo will bring his thriller comedy Fasten Your Seatbelt, while PARK Joong-hoon is coming with his movie industry set drama Top Star.

Filled with diverse programs, numerous guests, retrospective and veritable storm of eclectic events, this year’s Busan International Film Festival will have something for everyone. Proceedings will come to a close next Saturday, with a closing ceremony and screening for closer The Dinner, a local independent film from KIM Dong-hyun.
