MAI RATIMA Awarded Jury Prize at Deauville Asian Film Festival

Actor YOO Ji-tae Triumphs with Directorial Debut

Popular actor YOO Ji-tae, well known for the portraying the ageless villain in PARK Chan-wook’s Old Boy (2003), has just won his first prize as a feature director. During the Deauville Asian Film Festival in France, YOO’s debut feature film Mai Ratima was awarded the Jury Prize.

Mai Ratima, which stars PARK Ji-soo and BAE Soo-bin, is a drama and romance dealing with immigration. A young Thai woman is stuck in a loveless marriage in a Korean family that abuses her. One day she meets the a young man who defends her honor and they pick up and leave for Seoul together, beginning an unlikely romance in the process, but their troubles are only beginning.

YOO has had a formidable acting career that has ranged from Old Boy to melodramas such as HUR Jin-ho’s One Fine Spring Day (2001) or cult films such as KIM Sang-jin’s Attack the Gas Station (1999).

Having spent the last few years experimenting with directing short films, last year YOO presented his feature debut Mai Ratima which had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival. His film was later selected as the opening film of the Deauville Asian Film Festival for what was its International Premiere.
