Trailer for KIM Ki-duk’s <Pieta> released

A trailer for <Pieta>, the much anticipated 18th film from iconoclastic Korean director KIM Ki-duk, has finally been released. Appearing equal parts dark and foreboding, <Pieta> will be KIM’s first major release since his withdrawal from filmmaking in 2008. Last year, he completed two relatively experimental films -- the documentary <Arirang> and the fictional feature <Amen> -- but neither had an official domestic release within Korea.

The film concerns an isolated and brutal man (LEE Jung-jin) who grew up as an orphan and now works for a cruel loan shark. Without any family or loved ones in his life, he has no fear or hesitation when it comes to carrying out the more violent and depraved duties of his job. But one day, a mysterious woman (CHO Min-su) shows up in his life, claiming to be his mother. At first he doesn’t believe her, having no memories of a mother, but as his attachment to her grows, he discovers the gruesome and sad secret that motivated her to seek him out.

The movie has already received the strictest rating from the Korea Media Rating Board, a “19+ years and over” stamp. With religious imagery, themes of mercy and forgiveness, and the same air of hopelessness and decay that permeated the first stills from the film, <Pieta> appears to be a return to form for KIM, whose savage but eloquent films such as <Bad Guy> and <The Isle> had formerly made him a mainstay of the international film festival circuit.

The film will be released sometime this August. You can view the trailer, which has yet to be subtitled in English, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBpEiDwNuN8\
