Hosung (Son Hyunjoo), a big-name gangster who once dominated Chungcheong-do Province, returns home after serving 8 years in prison. However, his younger brother Jongsung (Park Hyukkwon), who has been taking care of the family while Hosung was away, is not happy about his big brother’s coming home at all. Hosung's daughter, who is about to get married, and his son, who grew up without the care of his father, are also ashamed of their ‘ex-gangster’ father. Only Hosung’s mother Jungnim (Son Sook) feels sorry for her eldest son. Hosung wants to establish his lost authority at his father's funeral. He brings the gang members he worked with in the past to his father's funeral home and plans a new business. However, Hosung's huge plan to turn his life around begins to twist out of control.

The film When Spring Comes is a drama that delicately and humorously shows the aspect of Korean family culture, focusing on Hosung, an old gangster who dreams of turning his life around through his father's funeral. Director Lee Donku said, "We can be deeply relatable to the characters in the film because all of us are someone's sons and daughters, parents and children, and old friends." Director Lee Donku was invited to the Panorama at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival with his debut film Fatal and directed Entangled (2014), a film that intimately captures the latent anxiety and fear inside of human hearts. He also directed Fanfare (2020), which won the Best Director at the 23rd Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.

The film When Spring Comes has a lot of fun watching the superb acting of Korean representative actors. Actor Son Hyunjoo, who has been acting for 32 years since his debut, has returned to the screen in 3 years by impressively playing a new character called ‘Chungcheong-do Gangster.’ Also, Actor Park Hyukkwon, a pillar of the Korean independent film industry, and Son Sook, a godmother in the theatrical world, appear together to make the audience empathize with the dilemma of all families in the world.
