In the midst of the Somali Civil War, Somalia’s capital Mogadishu became a dangerous war zone in 1991, and as the city tore itself apart, diplomats of the Korean embassy and their families found themselves stranded with no communication. One night, officials from the North Korean embassy appeared at their door, asking for help. These unlikely allies work together in order to find a way out of Mogadishu.

Four years after The Battleship Island (2017), director Ryoo Seungwan returns with his latest action epic, once again derived from a moment in Korean history. The hit director of Crying Fist (2005) and Veteran (2015) teamed up for the first time with stars Kim Yunseok (The Priests, 2015), who plays the South Korean ambassador, and Zo Insung (The King, 2017), appearing as a counselor the embassy. Playing the North Korean ambassador is Huh Joonho (Default, 2018), with Koo Kyohwan (Peninsula, 2020) playing a lawyer for the North Koreans.

Escape from Mogadishu, a joint production between Ryoo’s company Filmmaker R&K and Dexter Studios, was shot on location in Morocco, substituting for Somalia. Following its release in Korean theaters this month, the film will have its international premiere next month as the opening film of this year’s New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF).
