Dowoo (Lee Joongok) is running an old motel on the shore of Paro Lake, in the mountains just 20km away from the border with North Korea, while looking after his old mother, who is afflicted with dementia. When she disappears one day, the whole village comes to provide assistance to this man who has always been praised for his devotion. Dowoo’s attention turns to a mysterious man, Hoseung (Kim Daegun), who showed up at the motel soon after and plans to stay here for a while. With his mother remaining missing, people around him begin to find his attitude suspicious, which doesn’t fail to irritate him, and even the police take an interest in him and conduct searches at the motel. When the body of a friend who was bullying Dowoo is discovered in the motel, Dowoo is confident he just fell into a trap laid by his enigmatic guest.

Not to be confused with his homonym, the veteran director Im Sangsoo, Lim Sangsu is a young filmmaker who spent a decade honing his skills as an assistant director and had only made two shorts before, the latest of which, Rain Shower (2018), won the Jury Award at the Paris Korean Film Festival. His debut feature, which he describes as an exploration of the frightening things people keep hidden deep inside of them, stars Lee Joongok, who was most recently seen in HITMAN: AGENT JUN and Extreme Job.
