Prolific auteur Hong Sangsoo returns with his 26th film In Front of Your Face, his second film of 2021 after Introduction. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in its new ‘Premiere’ section. It is the 11th of Hong’s film to premiere at the prestigious French event.

In Front of Your Face stars Lee Hyeyoung as a middle-aged actress who returns to Korea after many years away. She comes to stay with her sister unexpectedly and marvels at the high-rise apartment her sister lives in, having never lived in one herself. The woman reacquaints herself with her home country while also seeming to keep a secret to herself. During her time in her native land, she also takes time to visit a director, who offered her a role in his project. Having not been active as a performer for years, she turned it down but has agreed to meet with the filmmaker during her trip.

Similar to the character she portrays, Lee Hyeyoung returns to the silver screen through Hong’s latest film, having not portrayed a leading role in a film since The Devil’s Game in 2008, though she has appeared in a handful of TV dramas in the interim. The film also stars Cho Yunhee, who appeared in Introduction earlier this year, and Kwon Haehyo, who has starred in several of Hong’s films.
