When a woman’s husband goes on a business trip, she decides to meet several of her friends around Seoul. She visits two of them at their homes, and bumps into another by chance in a theater.

Such is the synopsis for the latest film by celebrated filmmaker HONG Sang-soo. Dense plotlines are seldom a component of his work and The Woman Who Ran is no exception, focusing on the director’s unique ruminations on quotidian life with a formidable cast in tow. The film has quickly cemented itself, even during this difficult year, as one of the filmmaker’s most acclaimed offerings. The film debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, earning him the Silver Bear Award for Best Director. He is only the second Korean filmmaker to earn the prize, following KIM Ki-duk’s win for Samaritan Girl in 2004. More recently, HONG’s latest earned the Best Screenplay Award at the Bucharest International Film Festival and has also been invited to screen at the up-coming New York Film Festival and San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Playing the titular woman is once again HONG’s muse KIM Min-hee, who has now starred in seven of the director’s last eight films. Joining them are a coterie of HONG’s most beloved frequent collaborators, including SEO Young-hwa, SONG Sun-mi, KIM Sae-byuk and KWON Hae-hyo.
