Set in the 15th century, The King’s Letters chronicles one of the greatest achievements of King Sejong the Great, the fourth and most famous King of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty. King Sejong, played here by superstar SONG Kang-ho, dreamed of creating a writing system that could be easily used and understood by all the people but many people in his court opposed his desire in order to keep knowledge and power in the hands of the few. Despite these frustrations, the king learns of a monk with special linguistic skills (PARK Hae-il), whom he secretly brings into the palace to help him with his plan.

Acclaimed screenwriter and producer, not to mention period drama expert, CHO Chul-hyun makes a long-awaited debut as a director with The King’s Letters, which brings together one of the most anticipated casts of 2019 in the form of stars SONG Kang-ho and PARK Hae-il, who have collaborated together to memorable effect in the past on BONG Joon-ho’s Memories Of Murder (2003) and The Host (2006). CHO’s writing credits include LEE Joon-ik’s The Throne (2015) and Blades of Blood (2010), while his producing credits include LEE Hae-young’s Foxy Festival (2010). The King’s Letters gives SONG his second role as a Joseon Era king, following The Throne (2015).
