Run, Maze Runner! by HWANG Hee-yun /  Jan 30, 2018
Box Office Records of MAZE RUNNER Series

The Maze Runner, a science-fiction series written by American writer James Dashner, was adapted into a trilogy of films with the first installment hitting theaters in 2014. The first film is about a group of boys who have their memories wiped clean and struggle to survive in a maze surrounded by giant walls. The film version of the dystopian sci-fi series has been immensely popular although ticket sales have been somewhat lower than those of other young adult adaptations such as the Twilight series or The Hunger Games series.

Starting with just 88,571 viewers on the first day of its release in Korea, The Maze Runner drew audiences totaling 2.8 million people. Its sequel, Maze Runner: Scorch Trials maintained a level of performance similar to that of the first one. In spite of reviews that the sequel was inferior to the first installment, Maze Runner: Scorch Trials did well enough, luring 2.7 million filmgoers. Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the anticipated final part of the series, is fulfilling its mission successfully, topping the Korean box office for more than two weeks since its release. Maze Runner: The Death Cure’s current number for filmgoers stands at 1,953,775 and the movie is fast approaching the records of previous installments, selling more than 1 million tickets during the first five days of its release. At this rate, it is expected to exceed the final box office tally of The Maze Runner, but it has been put on hold by the sleeper hit of family drama Keys to the Heart.
