Suni (LEE Young-ran), an elderly woman living in the United States, receives a phone call from Korea. It is about her old family house which is set to be torn down soon. She visits Korea with her granddaughter and the house brings her long-lost memories.

Young Suni (PARK Bo-young) has to move to the countryside with her mother and younger sisters for her convalescence to cure problems with her lungs. The family comes across a boy (SONG Joong-ki) in their house who can’t speak and acts like a wolf. Suni and her mother accept him as a family member, name the boy Chul-soo, and teach him how to speak. However Ji-tae (YOO Yeon-seok) doesn’t like Chul-soo because he has a crush on Suni.

One day, Chul-soo saves Suni from the dangerous site of the collapsed building when he goes out with his new family. However, his superhuman power terrifies people so authorities quarantine him. In fact, it turns out that he was created as a killer weapon by scientists for military purposes and should not be out in the world among regular people. Chul-soo escapes to look for Suni and this makes Ji-tae plan to eliminate him.

After being well received for his indie film, End of Animal (2011), A Werewolf Boy (2012) was director JO Sung-hee’s major debut film. The director’s agony between his own storytelling style and commercial considerations led to the creation of the multifaceted character of Chul-soo. He is the amalgamation of the director’s apocalyptic view and fantasies for women audiences as well as a pet and the strongest lover in the world. The conventions of Western horror from Frankenstein and Werewolf to King Kong were reborn as a fantasy melodrama in Korean space and time.

Drawing 7 million moviegoers, A Werewolf Boy shot actor SONG Joong-ki to stardom proving his expandability into big screens when he began to gain acclaim in TV dramas. Actress PARK Bo-young, a heroine of Scandal Makers (2008), succeeded in developing the confident and independent character image on her own despite her small and cute appearance. Meanwhile, the movie’s popularity was cause for the release of the director’s cut of the film in the same year.
