PYO Yong-su is the sound supervisor who has worked on more Korean independent films than anyone else. While working as a member of Seoul Visual Collective, a group of independent filmmakers that made documentary films aiming at video activism, PYO had a chance to take a course on sound design and mixing at Mediact, a public media education center in the early 2000s. He then began to work in the sound studio of the center as a professional operator for sound post-production of independent films, including short films, animations, documentaries and narrative fictions. One of the memorable works supervised by PYO includes the breakthrough documentary by Director KIM Dong-won, <Repatriation> (2003), which won an award at the Sundance International Film Festival. PYO has been in charge of sound design and re-recording in many significant documentary films since then, including <Grandmother’s Flower> (2007), <The Border City 2> (2009), <Two Doors> (2001) and <Nonfiction Diary> (2013). PYO also has worked for countless independent narrative films and animations that were critically acclaimed and widely screened at film festivals around the world, such as Director NO Dong-seok’s acclaimed debut feature <My Generation> (2004), Director KIM Kyung-muk’s <Stateless Things> (2011) and Director CHANG Hyung-yoon’s <The Satellite Girl> and <Milk Cow> (2013). The facilities of the sound studio at Mediact has improved immensely since 2013, and PYO is currently the most accessible and helpful sound supervisor amongst independent filmmakers. He is also involved in educational courses and programs of the media center, while teaching documentary sound design and mixing at colleges.
