On September 20 the Korean Film Council, in association with production company Shincine, held a public screening of the newly restored version of KIM Cheong-ki's classic 1976 animated film Robot Taekwon V. The two-year effort by KOFIC to restore the film from various sources, including a newly discovered print, marks a milestone in Korea's early efforts in film restoration. Transferred to digital format and restored by a team of 72 people, the effortcost a total of one billion won (US$1 million). Employing color correction, reducing grain, erasing the effects of dirt and scratches and providing a new 5.1ch Dolby soundtrack in addition to the restored original soundtrack, the team worked on every one of the film's 108,852 frames, one-by-one. Although partial restoration of the films An Empty Dream by YU Hyun-mok and Mandala by IM Kwon-taek have been carried out in the past two years, Robot Taekwon V is the first example of a Korean film that has been restored in its entirety. Apart from the benefit of enjoying the restored film, the project is seen as a means of improving the level of Korea's technical expertise in film restoration. Robot Taekwon V tells the story of two inventors and their son and daughter who join forces to battle a group of giant robots unleashed by a mad scientist. The son employs his taekwondo skills in operating the skyscraper-sized Robot Taekwon V. The film was immensely popular during the late 1970s and is fondly remembered by many Koreans who grew up at that time. The restored film is scheduled to be screened during the Pusan International Film Festival on October 9 and 11. A future commercial release is also under consideration.
